## Der Alster Steamer „St. Georg“
Built at Hamburg's Reiherstieg shipyard in 1876 for the Alster shipping company of H. E. Justus as the “Falke”, the steamer “St. Georg” is today the oldest preserved operational vehicle of Hamburg's local transport system and also the oldest steamboat in Germany.
For 63 years, the steamer was in regular service from Jungfernstieg to Barmbek to Von-Essen-Straße, Mühlenkamp and Winterhuder Fährhaus. In 1911, it was converted into a smooth decker and renamed the “Galatea”. Hochbahn AG took over the steamer in 1919 and changed the name to “St. Georg” in 1936.
After the war, the ship found a new home on the Havel and Wannsee via detours in Berlin, initially as the motor ship “Deutschland” and later as the “Planet”.
The threat of scrapping led to the rescue idea and the founding of the Alsterdampfschiffahrt association in 1988. The “revival” was achieved at the shipyard in Dresden-Laubegast. It gave the steamer back its 1930s appearance and a new heart: an old two-cylinder steam engine. Since 1994, the ship has been sailing under steam again on the Alster as the “St. Georg”.
