## ”Down under”—the Old Elbe Tunnel
The St. Pauli Elbtunnel connects the St. Pauli neighborhood with Steinwerder island. It was built between 1907 and 1911, and was one of the first road tunnels in the world. Today, it is a tourist attraction, but also an important cornerstone for mobility in the city. The appearance, the construction of the elevators to take whole horse carriages, the neo gothic design, simply everything about this award-winning building is testament to the progress of technology and infrastructure of its time. Technology nerds experience the Old Elbe Tunnel as a witness of engineering art and the pursuit of innovation of this time with all their senses.

## So far, so good
On this tour, Thomas Heidborn takes you to the cupola of the head building on the St. Pauli side and mentally back to the time where it all began. He has been tunnel supervisor for more than 39 years and knows the details and the stories like the back of his hand. He will take you through the tunnel and direct your attention to many of the hidden details. In the show room, the small museum on the southern side, not usually open, you can see artifacts, historic machinery and a large professional model of the entire facility—of course with moving elevators. The tour completes with a view of the Elbe river across from St. Pauli, the Landungsbrücken jetties, and the City of Hamburg, which we like to call the most beautiful in the world.

Cap San Diego is a general cargo ship built in 1961 that still is seaworthy and offers excursions. On our tour we will see the bridge as well as the engine room. An exhibition takes us back in time to worldwide shipping before the introduction of containers.
![Cap San Diego at Landungsbrücken](./Cap_San_Diego-DSC_0417.jpg)
## The largest, operational museum freighter in the world
Welcome on board and experience the working technology of Cap San Diego! From the command bridge to the engine room our ship offers lively impressions of the great time of general cargo shipping of the 1960ies before containers were introduced. All important areas of the ship are open to visitors, providing a unique insight into a piece of industrial heritage.
### Engine room: everything that makes us go
The extent of the main engine is impressive: you will need to scale two stairs, called “companionways”, to get all the way down to the operation station of the engine. Here the ship is driven. Follow us into the realm of engineering!
### Design and construction: fully shipshape
When you admire the elegant salon on board, it's easy to forget that Cap San Diego is a freighter and not a passenger ocean liner. The upholstery in the hall is luxurious and inviting, tasteful and sterling the brass and leather of the bar. In contrast the crew accomodations can be visited as well. Considering the standards of the time, they were considered homey and comfortable, nonetheless. We invite you through the open doors.
### The Bridge: high up with the captain
Through the wide bank of windows the command crew has everything in sight. The bridge continues to be the center of control of the ship. Here the captain works while she is underway, here the course is set that Cap San Diego is taking, here the helmsman is steering. Enter into the world of navigation!
### Masts and cargo gear: lifting them high
The silhouette of Cap San Diego includes the masts and seemingly confusing tangle of booms, cranes, wires and lines connecting them. This cargo gear made Cap San Diego into a “fast ship” that could be loaded and unloaded quickly. Take a look!
### Hatches and decks: big trap and much below
Careful! Don't get dizzy looking down through Hatch 1 into the deep holds. Cap San Diego seems bigger on the inside. Follow us into the belly of the beast!

Would you like to see where the rc3 teleshop studio actually stood? Or what a ship of the GDR deep-sea fishing fleet looks like from the inside? And what the technology looks like that still keeps the ship afloat and visible in Hamburg today as a non-profit, participatory cultural spaceship? Come along for a tour on the motor vessel Stubnitz!

![Die Brücke der MS Stubnitz](stubnitz_bruecke_workshop_hs_Karlsruhe.jpg)
The Stubnitz was built as a refrigerated ship in Stralsund in 1964, transformed into a mobile art and culture ship after reunification and has since been active as a floating cultural venue in over 20 European port cities. She has been a listed building since 2003 and is now one of the oldest technically authentic maritime vessels of this size that is still seaworthy. Concerts, parties, readings, performances and corporate events usually take place on board. As part of the 37c3, crew members will guide you through the otherwise closed parts of the 80-metre-long ship - including, for example, the engine room, radio room, "server room", chambers in almost original condition, cargo holds, bridge and, of course, the event rooms and the former studio of the teleshop... uh yeah.
If you can no longer click on a ticket, don't worry, there may be new contingents and it's best to get out your notebooks and sign up anyway: From 6 pm on day 2 (28.12.23) there will also be the "Cable Trash - 37c3 Congress-Edition" on board (18:00 tales from the depths (kilosecond presentations), ~20:00 live: die stadt der zukunft (bremen), ~22:00 djs (tba) ... open end: https://cabletrash.de/ct39.htm - there will also be time to roam around on the ship - unguided in the public areas.
If you live in the Hamburg area and would like to help us in general with your skills and motivation, please contact us at: it-crew@stubnitz.com, we have a lot planned, a lot to offer and are looking for reinforcement in the team.
In general, we are currently in a phase where we urgently need to raise third-party funds and donations, so help us & spread the word. If you can't spare 15€ for a tour, let us know at the tour and we'll refund half of it.

A beacon of the energy transition: For far too long, the old anti-aircraft bunker in Wilhelmsburg was an architectural eyesore. Today, the former wartime building is a globally unique example of the innovative use of renewable energy and a pioneer for other regional power plants around the world. The tour of the bunker shows the development from a wartime building to an innovative lighthouse project for the energy transition. Afterwards, you can enjoy the incomparable panoramic view over the city at Café vju.
![The original anti-aircraft tower](energiebunker-Flakturm_Wilhelmsburg.jpg)
![The redesigned Energy Bunker](energiebunker_fassade_schraegansicht_teaser.jpg)
#### History/change
Just a few years ago, Wilhelmsburg residents in Neuhöfer Straße were presented with a picture of an oppressive past: on an area the size of almost three and a half soccer pitches, a fenced-in dark grey and black concrete block towered 42 meters into the sky. A relic from the Second World War. An anti-aircraft bunker with a battered façade that spoke of hardship, fear and the futility of war without fitting into the here and now.
Between 1942 and 1944, both the reinforced concrete colossus in Wilhelmsburg and its counterpart on Heiligengeistfeld were built as a symbol of the strength of the German Reich at the time. In addition to protecting the civilian population from bombing raids, the two bunkers with their anti-aircraft guns (Flak for short) were primarily used for air defense. After the collapse of the Nazi regime, the Allies decided to put an end to the two megabunkers. In 1947, the British army blew up the interior of the flak bunker in Wilhelmsburg to make it unusable for military use again. The building sat unused for the next 60 years.
With the start of the International Building Exhibition (IBA), which was held in Hamburg from 2006 to 2013, the starting signal was finally given for the new use of the dilapidated war ruin: an eco-power plant was to be built in Wilhelmsburg. A vision of the future in a memorial from the past.
### Technologies
Today, the energy bunker supplies green electricity and, above all, heat for the entire Reiherstieg district in Wilhelmsburg. A great example of how an entire district can be supplied with renewable energy. Various environmentally friendly technologies are used to ensure that Wilhelmsburg residents have a nice warm home and sufficient electricity.
#### Solar energy
Over 2,000 square meters of solar collectors and cells are installed on the roof and on the south side of the energy bunker, capturing the sun's rays over Hamburg. The solar thermal system on the roof generates heat, while the photovoltaic system on the south side generates electricity.
#### Waste heat
Waste heat from a neighboring industrial area is fed into the energy bunker, where it is stored and passed on to consumers as heat.
#### Combined heat and power generation
Two combined heat and power plants (CHP) inside the energy bunker, powered by municipal biogas from the Hamburg sewage treatment plant, provide electricity and heat thanks to combined heat and power generation. To ensure that the heating in Wilhelmsburg never runs out, two peak-load boilers secure the heat supply at exceptional peak times.
#### Storage
The largest space in the energy bunker is taken up by the heat storage tank. This large buffer storage tank holds 2 million liters of water. This corresponds to 2,000 cubic meters. The water serves as a storage medium for the thermal energy that is fed in over the course of the day from industrial waste heat, solar collectors and CHP units. The storage tank itself is particularly well insulated and thus ensures that there is enough heat for the Elbe island, especially at peak times.
### Local use
The energy bunker in Wilhelmsburg has an impressive track record: At a good 16,500 MWh, the total output of heat generation corresponds to the consumption of more than 2,000 households and can be further expanded in the future. In addition, the bunker generates as much electricity from renewable sources as around 1,000 Hamburg households consume. In this way, almost 5,000 tons of climate-damaging CO2 are saved every year. What's more, it's a really good feeling to know that the electricity from the socket and the heat from the heating system were produced just around the corner.

## Tango Class
is the successor to the Foxtrot class, the first Soviet diesel electric boat with an anti-sonar coating. It was the conventional counterpart to the Victor II-class nuclear submarines and was originally designed and built for anti-submarine combat. For the first time, the following innovations were used in this Soviet submarine type: a sonar complex instead of individual systems, a connection of the sonar complex with a combat command system, automatic data input into the torpedoes before the shot, an automatic ballast control system and automatic depth control incl. Autopilot. In contrast to the Foxtrot class, these submarines had a better streamlined shape, which made them even more useful for underwater use. Due to the cylindrical shape, which extended over the entire hull, the capacity of the batteries could be increased and a further developed electrical system (e.g. bow sonar and fire control system) could be installed. This special rubber coating made it almost impossible for the sonar equipment of the western secret services to locate this espionage submarine.
For this reason, the tango would probably not have been an easy target for submarine defenders in shallow water. The secret military project 641b, the Tango class, was used by the Soviet Navy on long patrols and submarine hunts from 1976. Due to the little concrete information about this ship, almost hardly any photos and reports made it to the public.
