We will discover Hamburg from its most beautiful side - on board of the oldest and only genuine Alster steamer, the “St. Georg” from 1876. The crew, consisting of the captain, the engineer and the conductor, will take us on a trip back in time on the faithfully restored steamship “St. Georg”.
## Round trip across the Alster with a view of the night skyline
On this exclusive one-hour tour starting at the Jungfernstieg, we will sail from the Inner to the Outer Alster and also take a look at some of the canals and tributaries.
## The Alster Steamer „St. Georg“
Built at Hamburg’s Reiherstieg shipyard in 1876 for the Alster shipping company of H. E. Justus as the “Falke”, the steamer “St. Georg” is today the oldest preserved operational vehicle of Hamburg’s local transport system and also the oldest steamship in Germany.
For 63 years, “St. Georg” was in use as a regular service steamer from Jungfernstieg to Barmbek to Von-Essen-Straße, Mühlenkamp and Winterhuder Fährhaus. In 1911, it was converted into a flush-decker and renamed “Galatea”. In 1919, Hochbahn AG, the transport company of Hamburg, took over the steamer. In 1936, the transport company renamed the steamer “St. Georg”.
After the war, the ship found a new home, via detours, on the Havel and the Wannsee in Berlin - initially as the motor ship “Deutschland” and later under the name of “Planet”.
In 1988, imminent scrapping gave birth to the idea of rescuing the shipwreck and founding the association “Alsterdampfschiffahrt”. The “revival” was achieved at the shipyard in Dresden-Laubegast. There, the steamer was given back its old appearance from the 1930s. In addition, the shipyard gave the steamer a new heart: an old two-cylinder steam engine. Since 1994, the ship has been sailing, alive and kicking, under steam again as “St. Georg” on the Alster.

Choose one of three themed harbor cruises through Germany’s largest seaport. The “Alternative Harbor Tour” focuses on historical, political, and social contexts that tend to be overlooked on other tours.

## Harbour Cruise “Treasure Boxes and Pepper Sacks” – The Port of Hamburg in Unequal Global Trade (English)
Where does our coffee come from, where is the world’s largest warehouse for Oriental rugs hidden, and why does poverty-stricken Liberia have one of the largest merchant fleets? This tour takes you behind the façades of brick walls and container bridges. It’s about coffee and cocoa, soybeans and bananas, jeans and arms.
The tour sheds light on the background of global trade with Africa, Asia, and Latin America. It explains why coffee and cocoa have become so cheap, why scrap metal has become a top export, and who profits from the extremely unequal trade between North and South.
## Harbor tour “Women’s work in the harbor and at sea” (German)
Women’s work also plays an important role in the history of the port: Coffee sorters in the Speicherstadt and workers from Poland at the Reiherstieger wool combing factory go on strike for their rights. At the same time, the trafficking of girls at the Amerikahöft in the emigrant barracks experiences a sharp increase: this is what happened in Hamburg at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. These jobs no longer exist today. Many women at sea are organized in the Verband Frauen zur See (Women at Sea Association): former fish workers in the GDR fleet, captains, engineers, women working in the service industry…
Using the example of the oil mill, you will learn about the connection between IMF requirements and migrant women in sex work and other service industries.
## Harbor tour “Pirates!? Glorious scoundrels or outcasts of this world?” (German)
What does piracy have to do with international fish theft off the coast of Somalia? Who is using Somalia’s waters as a dumping ground? What is the story behind the weapons on the captured “MS Faina”? Who are the young men from Somalia? And what does “security” mean in the Gulf of Aden? The criminal proceedings before the Hamburg Regional Court dealt with legal issues. In cooperation with the Hamburg group kein mensch ist illegal (no one is illegal), our harbor tour sheds light on the political background.

On this three-hour bus tour, we will travel back in time: learn more about the fascinating, more than 800 years spanning history and ongoing modernization of the Port of Hamburg!
![An aerial photo of the HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA)](HHLA_Container_Terminal_Altenwerder_CTA_in_Hamburg_-_Winter_2010_-_04.jpg "© CC BY-SA 3.0, Frank Grunwald - Frankenwagen")
![An aerial photo of the HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB)](HHLA_CTB_AM.jpg "© CC BY-SA 4.0, HHLA - Anke Maurer")
In the historic warehouse complex Speicherstadt (German for “warehouse city”) and at the oldest preserved port facilities in the Port of Hamburg, the “50er Schuppen” (German for “the 50’s sheds”), the time of conventional goods handling with crates, sacks and barrels is brought back to life. While crossing the Köhlbrand Bridge, we will have the opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking view over the huge port area from a height of almost 60 meters (196.85 feet).
Then, our bus driver will switch on the distinctive warning lights on the roof - and take us right into the heart of the action: huge container gantry cranes, high-legged straddle carriers, driverless transport platforms - welcome indeed to the exciting world of logistics!
During the tour, expert guides will explain all the technical and logistical details and leave none of your questions unanswered.
## Terminals
Two of the four terminals each are available to us for the Tour of the Giants:
### Burchardkai/CTB
Burchardkai/CTB is the oldest and largest container handling terminal in the Port of Hamburg. It handles almost a third of all the containers. 30 container gantry cranes work on thousands of ships that dock here every year. Several hundred rail wagons are loaded and unloaded every day.
### Containerterminal Altenwerder/CTA
The Altenwerder/CTA container terminal is an impressive example of largely automated logistics. We will show you driverless, computer-controlled transport platforms up close, which move the containers back and forth between the quayside and block storage as if by magic.
### O’Swaldkai
A good 500,000 tons of tropical fruits, cars and heavy cargo are handled at the O’Swaldkai multi-purpose terminal every year. In addition, the liner services coming from South and Central America can handle general cargo and containers at the multi-purpose terminal.
### Hansaport
Hansaport is Germany’s largest seaport terminal for iron ore and coal. Inconspicuous from the outside, pure high-tech on the inside: More than 10% of Hamburg’s total port throughput is handled here, or around 15 million tons of incoming tonnage per year.

At the Train Museum Lokschuppen Aumühle, the Verein Verkehrsamateure und Museumsbahn e. V. has collected and restored trains from 150 years of railroad history, among them multiple generations of Hamburg urban railways. We will use the light railway and take a tour around the grounds of the museum and to its exhibits. Competent volunteer members explain the history of the moving stock, the signal tours and safety equipment, track construction and many other aspects. Where possible, we will show you everything in operation - technology you can touch!
